HELP ME SOMEONE!!!!! I’m being driven crazy by the maids!
Its been almost 3 weeks in Bangalore and I’m still searching for maids. I need someone to cook, and to take care of the baby. And’s it proving to be mission impossible.
I wasted time till the 26th waiting for this agency to send me someone reliable. Then I just blew up at them and got my registration money back (yes, I did manage to get my money back, but I’ll tell that story later.
Dont EVER go to this agency Pruthvi Helpline Services, also called Keerthi Helpline services, located opposite the Shell Petrol pump on Varthur Road, near Whitefield.
I’d asked for a maid who can come in at 8/8:30 am, finish the cooking by 10am, and then take care of the baby whole day. And here’s what I got
Maid 1: 11th to 14th March
Kannada lady. 60+. Nice lady. Turned up promptly on time. Gelled with the baby. But, contrary to her claims, she couldnt cook north indian food. Her rotis stuck more to the chakla, and were barely edible. My hostel food used to be much better. She required help with the baby everytime she sat on the floor. She couldnt sit or get up without support, and definitely not with the baby. On day2, she said she’s not feeling well and asked me for a crocin. Day 3 she asked Mom for one. On day 4 she asked for a stronger pain killer. Day 5 she just didnt show up.
When I called up the agency, they had no clue as to her where abouts. They gave me 3 different reasons in 3 hours. “She called and said she’s not well.” “Her neighbour came and said she’s not well”, “Her father is not well”.
Maid 2: 16th
Loud Bengali lady. Age ~40. She came for an interview. And was too hell bent on pleasing us. She went on and on about how much she loves kids and how well she would keep the baby. But she’d start only from the 18th, she had to gor collect money form her previous employers on the 17th.
So we managed another few days without a maid. On 18th, Maid2 just didnt show up. Again frantic phone calls to the agency. Again, they had no idea.
Maid 3: 18th afternoon to 21st afternoon.
Tamil Christian, age ~35. On day1 itself, she asked for a raise. Said we had to pay her Rs 5000 pm rather than the Rs4500 the ageny said. And, she must leave at 5:45 pm sharp. She cant stay till 7pm. She’d been a cook earlier and worked for some foreigners. There she worked only half day and got paid 6000/-. And she kept reminding us of that every hour! For everything related to the baby -massaging, bathing, washing his nappies – she kept saying “I’m from a good family, I dont do this kind of work” while grudingly doing the work. For massaging the baby and feeding the baby, she’d first go pick him up and sit comfortably, then order Mom and me about – “Make the baby’s bottle””Go get his massage oil””Heat water for his bath”. And it didnt stop there. She insisted on bathing him only after lunch. For the massage she’d keep talking and playing with him for 30 mins, and gently rub some oil on him for about 3 minutes, then exclaim that she gives him such a nice massage! For his bath, she would just take the baby and sit. Then tell us to get his bath water, the soap, the towel, etc. And then to pour water on him. She was absolutely amazing. It was the first time I’d seen a maid ordering the family about. Oh, and she had to watch Surya TV for 2 hours every afternoon. On saturday, she lifted the baby by one hand – right in front of me. I told her not to repeat it. And then the drama started. She started crying and screaming.. That I should not talk to her that way, that she’s from a ‘good’ family, that xxxxx. I let her cool down and have lunch. Then I asked her to leave.
The agency said they’d send a replacement in 2 hours. 2 hours dragged into days. Many phone calls later,
Maid 3 came for an interview on 23rd March. She said she’d start work only on the 25th. Again, 25th, and no one showed up. The agency stopped answering phone calls.
26th I landed up at their office and took my money back after wasting half a day there.
15 days in Bangalore. Wasted waiting for the agency to send a maid.
15 days, and I’ve been to office only 5 days coz i dont have a maid.
I desperately call up almost everyone in my phone book asking them to help me find maid.
By now, I’ve also asked almost everyone in the building. During Junior’s morning and evening walks, I stop perfect strangers and ask if they can help me find a maid. Sadly, most refer me back to the same agency.
By some fluke I get in touch with a Delhi based agency who get maids from neighbouring villages. A close friend has a maid supplied by them as do some people in our buidling. After much ‘haggling’ – yes those maids are much in demand and almost fought over – they send me a lady. The agent who got her said he’ll be in Bangalore for a few days and we can have a 2-3 day trial period before signing the contract.
Friday, 27th March. I am so THRILLED. I thank my lucky stars. And then do a double take.
This lady has come straight from her village. She’s never worked as a maid/cook before. She’s never seen piped water or a gas stove. She cant figure out how to use the tap. More frantic phone calls. The people who referred this agency said that’s how it is, you have to be gentle and patient and teach the maid. She’ll learn. And once she does, she’ll be loyal, unlike the ‘chaloo’ bangalore the ka maids.
24 hours later, Mom and I are both pulling our hair out. After showing her so many times, she still cant use tap or the gas stove. She hasnt even seen most of the masalas ever, so bye-bye cooking. And in a whole day, she didnt even look at the baby or smile at him or play with him. So we can forget the baby care part.
We call up the agent and ask him to take her back. He says he’s already left bangalore. She’ll have to live with us till he comes back after a month. @#@$!@$!.GULP@
More frantic phone calls. And hair pulling. And muted swearing.
We manage to send her off.
So now Mom and me are back to sweating it out on our own. No maids. Even the jhadoo-paucha-bartan wali has taken 2 days off for Ugadi.
I’ve called up every agency in and around Marathalli. But no one has shown up with a promising candidate.
I’ve called Calcutta maid agency only to find that they’re not taking any bookings till 15th April.
I’ve signed up on babajobs.com, but all the candidates they’re sending live atleast an hour away, and want to come in only for a few hours.
I’ve exhausted my phone book. I’ve even called up peole I hadnt spoken to in years.
Why oh why is it so difficult to find a decent maid in Bangalore!@!@#@!!#$%#
Time is running out. Mom has to head back to Indore. I need a maid and I need her fast. And there’s not a hope in sight……..
